Newborn girl kidnapped

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, JAN. 20. An unidentified woman kidnapped a newborn baby girl from her grandmother after luring her with a reward of Rs. 1,500 on Thursday evening at Khairatabad. The Saifabad police launched a massive hunt for the woman following a complaint from Mahboob Bee, (38), a resident of Talabkatta.

Mahboob Bee's daughter, Peerma Bee (20), gave birth to a baby girl on Wednesday at Government Maternity Hospital, Nayapool. Even as the mother and baby were being discharged around 2 p.m., a woman befriended Mahboob Bee and made her believe that the Government was giving a reward of Rs. 1,500 to relatives of every newborn baby girl. The woman went to Mehboob's house. "Within minutes, she won their confidence and tricked them," the Saifabad Sub-Inspector, T. Madhu Mohan, said quoting Mahboob Bee.

The woman suggested that Peerma Bee take rest at home and asked Mahboob to accompany her to receive the cash incentive. "It seems the lady insisted on bringing the child along with them," the SI explained. Initially, they went to a nearby hospital. The burqa-clad woman convinced Maboob Bee that officials concerned were not available there.

At MCH office

Then, she took Mahboob Bee to Khairatabad MCH office. On reaching there by 5.30 p.m., she sent Mahboob upstairs saying that reward applications forms would be distributed there. "Every employee recognises me here. Hence, it is not advisable for me to come upstairs. I will keep the baby with me," she reportedly told the grandmother.

An unsuspecting Mahboob Bee went up and learnt that no such forms were being given. She hurriedly came down only to realise that the woman disappeared along with her granddaughter. A shocked Mahboob Bee approached the Saifabad police after frantically searching the locality for two hours.
