HYDERABAD, JAN. 20. Acting on clues given by two police constables, the city police on Thursday solved the gold ornaments robbery case. Three weeks ago, two Mumbai-based merchants were attacked with knives at Begumbazar and relieved of 8 kg of gold ornaments. Eight persons were arrested and 3 kg of gold was recovered. However, the alleged mastermind, Ashok, was still at large. "We hope to get at Ashok soon and recover the remaining gold," the Hyderabad Police Commissioner, V. Dinesh Reddy, told a press conference. A native of Rajasthan, Ashok was living in the Begumbazar area. He was into sale and purchase of jewellery on commission basis. On knowing that two jewellery merchants -- Abhishek Ranawat and Parichit Ranawath -- had come to the city, he reportedly joined hands with Narayandas, Amit, Ilyas and Asif, who were also commission agents, to commit the crime. They then roped in Khalid, Omer, Feroz and Ali to assist them in the commission of the crime. While Khalid and Omer were residents of Agapura, all others were living in Hussainialam.
First lead
The first clue came when two constables of Sultanbazar police station received information that Khalid and Ali, allegedly involved in some crimes earlier, were connected to the robbery. The accused were traced after monitoring their mobile calls. Patting the 25-member team, comprising men of Sultanbazar police, Task Force and Detective Department, that solved the case, the Commissioner gave away cash rewards to each of them. "As an incentive, they would also be given better placements in future," Mr. Dinesh Reddy said.
