By R. Ravikanth Reddy
HYDERABAD, JAN. 20. The University College of Law, Osmania University, has acquired the unique distinction of being the first Law College in South India to establish an Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Depository consisting of rich material on the subject of IPRs. The depository, sponsored by the Ministry of Human Resources Development (HRD), has over 300 titles exclusively dealing with developments in the IPR sector apart from CD-ROMs acquired from various agencies in the world. "This is going to be developed as a facilitation and a resource centre of IPR," says G.B. Reddy, Assistant Professor of the college. The HRD Ministry has provided a financial assistance of Rs. 2.5 lakhs which has been used to buy books and subscribe journals from the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), Geneva.
Useful for many
The depository will be of immense use to researchers, scientists, teachers and advocates dealing with IPR cases, as latest literature is available at the centre apart from books for reference. The IPR has become an important ingredient in various disciplines of study like law, culture and literature, economics, sociology, political science, management, commerce, engineering and technology. So, It becomes inevitable to understand the concept, evolution, classification, management and enforcement of the same and teachers from the above disciplines and also policy makers as well as the authorities, including the police and customs, are expected to acquaint themselves with the different aspects of intellectual property. Dr. Reddy reminds that not much literature is available in the market for the users though the subject is getting popular day by day and this depository will fill that gap. "Our effort is to build on the initial support extended by the HRD Ministry," he says.
Financial aid
The HRD has provided financial assistance based on a report submitted by the college seeking the establishment of depository and it is for the university to cash on it. A majority of books in the depository are not available in the market and even if they do, affording them is a problem. The publications of WIPO, which are generally not available freely, will also be acquired by the depository. In fact, the college plans to contact WIPO through the HRD Ministry to get access to all its material. An important aspect of the depository will also be to document traditional knowledge of the State.
