Nod for NIMS upgradation

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, JAN.20. An advanced research and referral university of the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) will be established soon on a 150-acre campus near here.

The proposal to upgrade NIMS into a university was approved by the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, during a high-level meeting attended by the Principal Secretary, Medical & Health, I.V. Subba Rao, the NIMS Director, D. Prasada Rao, and other officials today.

The university would be developed according to international standards. It would cater to the needs of all super-specialities, specialities and sub-specialities like physiotherapy, paramedical technology courses, nursing education, pharmacy, biotechnology and research, an official release said.

Though originally proposed to set up a NIMS research and reference centre, the Chief Minister offered to provide land for establishing a full-fledged university with a medical college, reference laboratories, university hospital, cardiac, renal and neuro centres and other facilities. The budget would be pooled from the Centre and the State Government.

Trauma centre

A level-one trauma centre with unique features was also proposed in the present NIMS campus to treat victims of disasters, natural calamities and epidemics in addition to the medical and surgical emergencies.

Speaking about the pharmacy wing in NIMS, the Chief Minister expressed his displeasure over the reported irregularities in supply and sales of medicines.

He directed Dr. Prasada Rao to set right things before his next visit to the institute. "I do not want to hear any complaint regarding prices of medicines and exploitation of patients by the pharmacy wing as in the past," he categorically told the Director, the release added.
