dated January 22, 1955: Homage to Satyamurthi

Mr. Satyamurthi was a great patriot, a great parliamentarian and a great soldier in the struggle for India's freedom who died a martyr in the cause, said Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru unveiling his statue in front of the Congress pandal at Satyamurthinagar, venue of the Congress session, on January 20. Mr. Nehru, speaking first in Hindi and then in English, said that whenever he visited Madras, he was reminded of the old times and old friends like Mr. Satyamurthi. For, whenever he came to Tamil Nad in the past, Mr.Satyamurthi used to be his companion and host and took him round to various parts. He remembered those tours, nearly 18 years ago, when they went to the farthest corners of almost all the districts of this province. When he heard that the Congress Nagar was to be called Satyamurthinagar, he thought how very fitting it was that they should honour a man who had done such great service in the fight for freedom. He was known more specially as a great parliamentarian. "We honour him still more as a soldier of freedom. You will remember that his end came practically in prison, ten or twelve years ago. When he fell ill and was practically on his death bed, he was released and he died soon after. So we honour him as one of our great martyrs to the cause of India's freedom."
