Sindhi Chamber wants CST scrapped

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JAN. 21. The Chennai-based Sindhi Chamber of Commerce has urged the Union Finance Minister to scrap Central Sales Tax (CST), saying that it cannot co exist with the Value Added Tax (VAT).

In their wish list for the 2005-06 Union Budget, submitted to the Finance Minister recently, the chamber said that the decision to continue with CST should be reconsidered or at least phased out within two years.

Admitting that Chinese competition along with lack of bank credit has spelt doom for many small and medium scale units, the memorandum said that outfits such as Small Industries Development Bank of India and Life Insurance Corporation should be encouraged to pick up equity in small and merium enterprises which should also be provided duty-free materials so to enable them to compete with China.

The chamber wants Mr. Chidamabaram to reduce the rates of a gamut of direct and indirect taxes, but most importantly it has urged him to bring about an attitudinal change in the bureaucracy making the government servants more business friendly.
