Invensys plans to launch new products

By P. Vikram Reddy

HYDERABAD, JAN. 21. Invensys Process Systems (IPS) is going through exciting times. Having launched over 50 releases in the last 18 months, it is now working on 20 new products and versions, which would be released during 2005, according to Stephen L. Young, Vice-President, Technology Platform Development, IPS (Invensys).

Much of the work on these would be done this year at the Invensys Development Centre (IDC) at Hyderabad.

"We are looking at further opportunities to capitalise on capabilities existing in Hyderabad, either by shifting or starting work in new areas of product development. We are going to grow operations (in Hyderabad), mostly in IPS," Mr. Young told The Hindu at the IDC on Friday.

Mr. Young would not like to disclose these additional "opportunities", but hinted that they could be identified by March, and work taken up this year.

There would be additional investment opportunities here, depending on areas of work, he said. It has 220 developers in Hyderabad, which incidentally is the single largest location (development centre) of Invensys globally.

He said 160 of these are working on IPS, which globally contributes about $1.4 billion to Invensys revenues of $7 billion (last year). Another 70-80 developers would be added in Hyderabad this year.

With 35,000 employees globally (8,000 of them in IPS) and over 10-12 IDCs, Invensys manufactures hardware and software that helps optimise and maximise efficiencies of processing plants such as refineries, pulp and paper, oil and gas, petrochemicals, and pharmaceuticals.

One of the totally new products, much of which would be done by Hyderabad teams, is the Intelligent Automation Control Configuration (IACC) built on Archestra technology. Hyderabad is also working on Suite Buyager (web portal which facilitates real time information on efficiency of operations), and Foundation Field Bus (major communication protocols to connect automation systems to field measurement systems).
