No to aid

Sir, — This refers to the article, "Saying no to aid" (Jan. 20). India has proved post-tsunami that it is capable of taking care of itself and also going to the help of its neighbours. It has certainly made a point by refusing foreign aid.

Vasi Venkatesan,
Dallas, Texas

Sir, — The monetary aid offered to India from the U.S. and other Western countries was much less compared to what we have given others. Then why should we accept it?

Deepu Unnikrishnan,
Pathanamthitta, Kerala

Sir, — India had enough resources for handling the immediate aftermath of the tsunami crisis. But substantial help will be required in the reconstruction stages.

Its claim of self-reliance cannot, therefore, be construed as an attempt at global diplomacy based on misguided pride.

K.S. Thampi,
Chennai

Sir, — I wonder why our country "with a reservoir of qualified teachers, doctors and other medical and disaster relief professionals" still has a considerable proportion of people who are starving.

If we figure that out, perhaps then we will not have such a hard time convincing the West to change its pre-conceived notions about India.

K. Anupama,
Pondicherry
