Belgaum
By Our Staff Correspondent
BELGAUM, JAN. 21. Sunith F. Rodrigues, Governor of Punjab and former Chief of Army, gave a call to Rotarians to explore whether they could get involved in the policy formulations and become an effective instrument for changing the lives of the poor in real terms. He said all such socially conscious sections should work towards wiping out corruption from the country. He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating the Centennial District Conference of Rotary International District 3170 comprising Mumbai-Karnataka, South Maharashtra and Goa regions here on Friday. The five Rotary clubs in the city hosted the conference. Stating that it was not enough to be satisfied with some mundane services such as putting up bus shelters, bringing up gardens and facilitating some civic amenities to society, he said there were much needy sections deserving the services of non-governmental organisations such as Rotary. An illiterate population of 35 per cent and over 300 million of those living below poverty line should be a natural concern for voluntary organisations. That apart, "why cannot we work to wipe corruption from the system (the country has been ranked 91st in the list of most corrupt countries in the world)? he asked. He asked non-governmental organisations and Rotarians to inculcate good moral values among children. Jaipal Singh Siba attended the conference on behalf of RI President, Glenn Estess Sr.
