NAGERCOIL, JAN. 21. The Kanyakumari district Collector, Sunil Paliwal, has made an appeal to well-wishers and philanthropists to contribute provisions and articles meant for women to tsunami-affected fisherfolk in the district. He was speaking to presspersons here on Friday after visiting Mela Manakudi, Pillaithoppu Azhikkal, Singaravelan Colony and Maramadi near Colachel to hear the grievances of the affected fisherfolk. He said the fisherfolk were in dire need of plastic chairs, table fans, coconut oil, mirrors, churidhars, jars to keep provisions, talcum powder, tooth paste, milk powder for children etc. The non-governmental organisations should come forward to contribute these articles to them, he said and added that a Germany-based non-governmental organisation has come forward to contribute table fans to those who were staying in temporary shelters put up in 34 centres in different parts of the district. The Collector also visited Mela Manakudi where Army personnel were attending to repairs of fishing boats damaged in tsunami. Those who want to repair their damaged boats can contact the cellphone number 94438 - 45378, said the Collector. Meanwhile, the Ministers, N. Thalavai Sundaram (Health), Pollachchi Jeyaraman (Food), Natham R. Viswanathan (Electricity and Transport) and Nainar Nagendran (Industry) visited Pillaithoppu, Azhikkal and Melthurai, and distributed stoves to 975 fishermen families.
