PONDICHERRY, JAN. 21. The Lieutenant Governor, M.M. Lakhera, today said medical statisticians had a vital role in determination of health care programmes, particularly in taking health services to rural areas. Inaugurating a three-day, 22nd annual national conference of Indian Society for Medical Statistics (ISMS) on `Medical statistics in planning, research, evaluation and monitoring of the National Health and Family Welfare programmes' at JIPMER here, Mr. Lakhera said that with the major chunk of the country's population in villages health programmes had to be drawn up on the basis of authentic statistics. He said bio-statistics and statisticians were vital links in furnishing better information to improve community health. The data would be helpful in future development of medical care. The Lieutenant Governor presented fellowship awards to those who made significant contributions in the field of medical statistics. The awards included gold medals and citations. Gastroenterologist from New Delhi B.N. Tandon released a souvenir, which was received by Mr. Lakhera. Prof. Tandon said it was unfortunate that bio-statistics was the least utilised science in the medical field though it offered the right inputs for decision makers in the health planning. He was glad to see bio-statistics emerging as a separate discipline. He said the future of bio-statistics depended on its correct perception by health administrators and funding agencies. The ISMS president, K.R. Sundaram, who presided, said statistics would be a boon if the methods were properly and appropriately used. Bio-statisticians had a positive role to play together with medical researchers, clinicians and medical and public health administrators to make the application of statistics a boon for unambiguous results.
