Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, JAN.21. In a move to ensure speedy rehabilitation of victims of the December 26 tsunami in Karaikal, the Pondicherry administration is encouraging the opening of a short stay home for women, who had lost their children and relatives, and an orphanage each for boys and girls. The homes will be managed by private non-governmental agencies in collaboration with the administration, an official source in Karaikal told The Hindu over phone today. The Department of Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare would start providing assistance to boat-owners from tomorrow in Karaikal to enable them to carry out repairs to the damaged vessels so that they could resume fishing activity at the earliest. Temporary shelters had already been opened in all the affected villages and more than 300 such shelters had been set up in Karaikal.
