HYDERABAD, JAN. 21. The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Friday said the proposed Research and Referral Centre of the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) would have a full-fledged department of physiotherapy. Inaugurating the 43rd annual conference of the Indian Association of Physiotherapists (IAP) here, he said as the medical profession had grown by leaps and bounds, physiotherapy was also assuming importance.
Speciality
Dr. Reddy said it was good the bill for a regulatory authority would soon be tabled in Parliament, as a result of which standards would be set and emphasis on quality training would increase. Sandra Moore, president, World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT), said the time had come for physiotherapy to be accepted as a medical speciality instead of being para-medical. Ensuring access to physiotherapy was becoming a priority for many governments, but it was important to make it affordable, she said, adding the need of the hour was for professionals to deliberate and come up with cost-effective services. The IAP president, S. Prabhu, said the association had 12,500 members and was a torchbearer in promoting standards and setting human values in physiotherapy.
Torchbearer
It was gaining importance, given the burgeoning population, he said, adding "it has taken man 50,000 years to evolve completely and it is up to us to tune our mind and body." Others present included NIMS Director Prasad Rao, organising committee chairman M.Y. Sayani, and organising secretary, Syed Imam Shoukat Ali. The general secretary, Desikamani, welcomed the gathering.
