ANANTAPUR, JAN. 21. The process for election of a new chairperson for the Zilla Parishad appears to have kicked off, at least unofficially, as the incumbent, Jonna Suryanarayana, is learnt to have owned the resignation letter faxed to the district Collector on January 17 night. Mr. Suryanarayana was said to have confirmed his desire to step down to the emissary sent by the Collector, the Chief Executive Officer of Zilla Parishad, K. Sripati Rao, who visited the former in Hyderabad on Thursday. He is likely to appear before the Collector soon as per the provisions of the Panchayat Raj Act to quit office. Confirmed of the fact that facing voting for election of a new chairperson is inevitable the district unit of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has, at last, taken up to fire fighting measures after a formal meeting with its ZPTC members here on Friday. The party leaders were said to have expressed their willingness to hold the flock together convincingly. Accordingly, all the key leaders of the party including the Polit Bureau member, K. Srinivasulu, the district president, V. Hanumantharaya Chowdary, the general secretary, B.K. Parathasarathi, P. Raghunatha Reddy, C. Obi Reddy and others left for a village in Chittoor district, where the party's Tanakallu ZPTC, Ravindra Reddy, is said to have been lodged by the rival Congress. Sources in the TDP camp said the party could still retain the ZP chief post if the State leadership intervenes. Mr. Suryanarayana had sent feelers to work for the party again if his suspension was withdrawn, they said. But, the matter needs to be taken up with the leadership by some one. The TDP leaders said but for the `trading' resorted to by the Congress they were hopeful of getting their members back if they were set free by the latter. The Congress candidature for the ZP top slot also holds key in the issue as a few members of the party had already expressed their opposition to their present leader on several occasions.
