Guntur

GUNTUR, JAN. 21. "Creating awareness among women on their problems is of no use. You must invite men also to such programmes and we need to discuss issues threadbare on such occasions," the district Collector, G. Jayalakshmi, has said. Inaugurating an awareness camp organised by the Department of Women and Child Welfare on Friday, she said that such meetings should be organised at the village-level and people from both sexes should be invited to thrash out problems or at least create awareness among men first. Large number of women did not have decision-making power in things like getting family planning operations done, she observed. Dowry harassment cases were on the rise, she said. The Women and Child Welfare Project Director, Kameswaramma, presiding over the meeting, said that parents of young women needed to understand their emotional needs better and provide support.
Attitudinal change
The Superintendent of Police, Jitender, congratulating those who had come forward to register complaints against harassment meted out to them, opined that legal procedure was not the final solution. The mindset of people must change to bring down the crime rate against women, he said. While 862 cases of atrocities against women were registered in 2004, only 40 stood in the court of law while the remaining were dismissed for lack of evidence or other reasons. The Special Sessions Judge, N. Basavaiah, said punishment for performing child marriages was only a maximum of three months of imprisonment or a monetary fine of Rs.1,000.
