CHANDIGARH, JAN 21 . The Shiromani Akali Dal president, Parkash Singh Badal, today asked the Chief Minister, Amarinder Singh, to step down in the face of mounting evidence that his office had become ``a den of corruption''. In a statement issued here, Mr Badal also demanded an immediate registration of criminal cases for corruption not only against Parliamentary Secretary Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi but also against some other persons named in the media report about Mr Sodhi receiving bribe for arranging land to a party in Pathankot. Mr Badal alleged that the latest scandal involving Mr Sodhi was only the tip of the iceberg of corruption which was not just overlooked but was being ``patronised'' by Capt Singh. A national daily had reported that Mr Sodhi had been caught in a sting operation taking Rs 25 lakh in a ``money-for-favour'' deal with a Pathankot businessman. ``What has come to light in the expose has surprised no one in Punjab, although it is still amazing that the Chief Minister carries on with his glib talk of giving a clean administration to the state,'' Mr Badal stated. -- UNI
