Inquiry sought

Bangalore Jan. 21. G. Narayana Kumar, former MLA, today urged the Government to order an inquiry into the reported threat on the life of the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramiah, for his stand on the Kanaka Gopura issue. In a press release, he said some elements, which had identified themselves with the Mumbai underworld, had made calls threatening the former Education Minister, H. Vishwanath, of dire consequences for the same reason. Such elements should be dealt with according to law. The demolition of the gopura had hurt the feelings of the Kuruba caste, he said. Mr. Kumar urged the Government to provide proper security to Mr. Siddaramaiah and Mr. Vishwanath.

Airport work from March

New Delhi Jan 21. Work on the much-delayed Bangalore International Airport Project is expected to commence in March. ``The land lease agreement with the State Government was inked last week and we are hopeful of starting work on the project from March,'' A. Ramakrishna, President (operations) and Deputy Managing Director, Larsen & Toubro, told reporters here. He said marketing of the airport should also start in the next five months. He admitted that there had been cost overrun due to the delay, some of which could be offset on account of low interest rates and dollar loans. Besides Larsen & Toubro, Zurich Airport Authority and Siemens are part of the consortium, which will build the Rs. 1,334-crore airport at Devanahalli. The project was cleared by the Karnataka Cabinet on December 21, 2004. — PTI

Leelavathi to chair meet

BANGALORE JAN. 21. The Karnataka Sugama Sangeetha Parishath has selected H.R. Leelavathi, singer, to chair its third annual light music convention on February 12 and 13 in Chikmagalore. The President of the parishat, Y.K. Muddu Krishna, said a reception committee headed by the former Chairman of the Legislative Council, B.L. Shankar, had been constituted to make arrangements for the convention. Over 300 singers across the State are expected to participate in the convention, he said.

Donation for tsunami fund

Bangalore Jan. 21. Visvesvaraya Vidyut Nigam Ltd. (VVNL) has contributed Rs. 5 lakhs to the Chief Ministers' Fund for tsunami relief.

A note from the Government-owned company said the Minister for Energy and Public Works, H.D. Revanna, presented the cheque for Rs. 5 lakhs to the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, on Thursday. The nigam's Managing Director, S.V. Nesargi, was present.

Nominated to MAHE Senate

BANGLAORE JAN. 21. The Registrar of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, K.M. Srinivasa Gowda, has been nominated as member of the Academic Senate of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) for two years, according to a press release issued here today.

Academy exam on March 6

BANGALORE JAN. 21. The Karnataka Itihasa Academy will conduct the Karnataka History Certificate examination on March 6 in Bangalore, Mysore, Gulbarga, Mangalore, Tumkur, and Dharwad for students of second year pre-university. Candidates, who will secure 35 per cent of marks, will be issued certificates and the first three rank-holders will be given cash prizes of Rs. 1,000, Rs. 600 and Rs. 400, respectively. The last day for submitting applications is February 15. Applications can be had from junior colleges where the examination will be conducted. Interested students may contact the academy at the Gokhale Institute of Public Affairs, Basavanagudi Road, Narasimharaja Colony, Bangalore 560019, for details.

Governor's address flayed

BANGALORE JAN. 21. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has criticised the address by the Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, to the joint session of the State Legislature as it had not mentioned any policy aimed at uplifting the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, backward castes and minorities. In a statement issued here, the State BSP President, B. Gopal, said there was no thrust in the speech on providing employment, distribution of ration cards, providing minimum wages, and free electricity to the houses of the poor. The Government's policies had increased unemployment and the misery of the poor, he alleged. The BSP expressed its support to the "Festival of Blessings" programme in the city by Benny Hinn, American evangelist.

Panel member to visit State

BANGALORE JAN. 21. Buduru Srinivasulu, member of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes, New Delhi, will visit the State for five days from Saturday. He will visit Shimoga on Saturday and Sunday and Chikmagalur on Monday and Tuesday and hold meetings with representatives of Maleru and Maaluru castes and government officials. Those from the two castes and representatives of non-governmental organisations working for the welfare of the Scheduled Tribes may meet Mr. Srinivasulu in Shimoga and Chikmagalur, according to a press release issued here.

Programme on former judge

BANGALORE JAN. 21. Doordarshan, Bangalore, will telecast a programme, "Manavathaavaadi Justice Shivaraj Patil," at 7.15 p.m. on Saturday. The programme will be on Shivaraj Patil, who retired as the Judge of the Supreme Court last week, according to a press release.

Motorcyclist killed

CHITRADURGA JAN. 21. A motorcyclist was killed on National Highway No.4 at Chitradurga when a lorry ran over him on Friday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Babu (28) of Chitradurga.

According to the police, Babu was going towards Nayakanahatti village when the lorry coming from Davanagere hit his motorcycle and ran over him.

The police have registered a case.

Applications Invited

MANGALORE JAN. 21. The Endowment Department has invited applications for nominating nine members to the managing committee of the Parivara Panchalingewhwar Temple, Panja, according to a release.

The term of the members will be three years. Applications can be had from the office of the Deputy Commissioner.

The last date to submit applications is February 4. Details can be had from the Deputy Commissioner's office.

Bidar Jan. 21. The senior Hindustani vocalist Rajmohammad Kesaratti of Koppal will perform at the Zilla Ranga Mandira at Bidar on Saturday, as part of the Tingala Sobagu programme of the Department of Kannada and Culture.

The Deputy Director of Kannada and Culture, Balawantrao Patil; the Assistant Director, Rajendra Yarnale; the Deputy Director of the Department of Pre-University Education, G.N. Gore; and the Social Welfare Officer of Bidar taluk, M.M. Sagar, will participate in the inauguration, according to an official press release. Vocalist Totappa Muttangi and the tabla player Shankaraiah Swamy Dubalgundi will perform at the Guru Basava Math in Hulsoor in Basavakalyan taluk, as part of the department's Sanskritika Sourabha programme, according to a release.

Contribution

Bidar Jan. 21. Students of Government Higher Primary School at Halbarga in Bhalki taluk have contributed Rs. 1,001 to the District Tsunami Relief Fund, a press statement said.

The president of the School Development and Management Committee, Basavannappa Phulare, and the headmaster, Ramachandra Karmaveera, handed over the contribution to the Block Education Officer.

Award

MANGALORE JAN. 21. Kuriya Vitala Shastri Yakshagana Foundation, Kurudapadavu, presented Kuriya Vitala Shastri Award - 2004 to Hostahitlu Mahalinga Bhat, a yakshagana artiste, at a function at Ujire on Thursday, a release said.

Senior yakshagana artiste, M. Prabhakar Joshi, spoke on the contribution of Mr. Bhat and Shastri to yakshagana.

Gold medals

MANGALORE JAN. 21. Five students of St. Theresa's English Medium School (ICSE), Bendur, and two students of St. Sebastian Aided Higher Primary School, Bendur, have bagged gold medals at a national level painting competition organised by Creative Art Academy, New Delhi, for 2004 recently, according to a release.

Roopa Calisthas, Preetha Pinto, Monisha D'Souza, Apoorva M. Kottari and Leyander D'Souza of St. Theresa's School and Raghavendra and Koushik Bhat of St. Sebastian School are the winners. Sudhir Balepuni, an art teacher, trained them.

Presentation on water policy

Mysore Jan. 21. The Water Supply and Sanitary Working Group of the Mysore Agenda Task Force will make a presentation on `Water policy for Mysore city' to the Minister of State for Labour and Haj, Tanveer Sait, on Saturday. The objective is to pressure the Government to streamline the water supply system by incorporating suggestions from the expert group so that there is no frequent disruption in water supplied to the city. The water policy has been classified under short-term, medium-term and long-term duration and the same will be presented to the Deputy Chief Minister in due course. The presentation will be held at the Mysore City Corporation's council hall at 1 p.m. The Mayor, the Deputy Commissioner, the Corporation Commissioner and other senior officials will also attend the presentation.

Cataract screening

Mysore Jan. 21. The SGC Hospital and Holistic Health Centre at Sri Ganapathi Sachchidanada Ashrama here will hold a free cataract screening and IOL surgery camp on January 31. The camp is being organised in association with the Mysore Race Club Eye Hospital and the District Blindness Control Society. Music contest

Mysore Jan. 21. Pathanjali Yogashikshana Kendra, Bharatiya Samskruthi Vidya Kendra and Bala Vikas Kendra in association with Premakeshav Sangeetha Vidyalaya will conduct a district-level and a State-level music competition in the city to mark the `aradhana' of saint Tyagaraja. The State-level classical music singing competition will be held on January 26. The district-level music contest includes a written test on the life and history of Tyagaraja and it will be held on January 29. Seminar on composers

Mysore Jan. 21. Sri Lalithakala Academy Foundation Trust here will organise a two-day seminar on the great composers of Mysore from Saturday.

The unique seminar will focus on the compositions of legendary vaggeyakaras Mysore Vasudevacharya, Veene Seshanna, Bidaram Krishnappa and Mysore Chowdiah.

The seminar will be held at the Bidaram Prasanna Sita Rama Mandira auditorim on the Narayan Shastry Road and will feature a quiz programme on the life and compositions of artistes.

Musician R.K. Srikantan, V. Nanjundaswamy, C.A. Sridhar and Nagalakshmi Suryanarayana will present papers.

The seminar will begin at 5 p.m. on both the days and the former Minister, Rani Satish, will inaugurate the seminar.
