CHENNAI, JAN. 21. Indian Overseas Bank, stepping up the pressure gradually, showed why it is considered a potent force in the national basketball arena. The Chennai side scored a crushing 95-67 victory over Andhra Pradesh in a men's Group-B contest of the All Star Club all-India tournament at the Venkatanarayana Road courts on Friday. With its second loss in three matches, Andhra is virtually out of the race, while IOB warmed up for the battles ahead with a typically authoritative display. IOB possesses possibly the best bench strength in the country despite losing two players to ONGC. The line-up, spearheaded by Asian All Star player Robinson, has both height and agility; it has sound Post-play and sharp shooting as well. Andhra was robust in its approach, concentrating on shooting and drive-ins. The side ran IOB close till half-time (40-48), but the latter carried too much ammunition to be stopped. Vijaya Bank (Bangalore) posted its second win in Group-A when it defeated Punjab 79-70 in extra-time after the teams were level at 64. In the women's section, Central Railway put it across Rising Star (Chennai) 72-51 in a Group-B match.
Men: Group-A: Vijaya Bank (Bangalore) 79 (Roshan 20, Murali Mohan 17, Rony Zacharia 14, Srinivas Gowda 10) bt Punjab 70 (Gurpeet 24, Jagdeep 27); Group-B: IOB 95 (Robinson 26, Chandrasekaran 19, Sukaneshwaran 14, John Plato 10) bt A.P. 67 (Liju 21, Prasad 18, Nihal Yadav 15, Shiva Prasad Reddy 11).
Women: Group-B: Central Railway 72 (Indhu 20, Sini Shyju 13, Geo Blessen 10, Ambily 10) bt Rising Star, Chennai 51 (Lakshmi 17, Deepa 14, Revathy 10). Our Principal Correspondent
