CHENNAI, JAN.21. The release of sewage into the Adyar River by commercial establishments has been checked and sewer mains flowing towards the river from residential areas of Saidapet and Ekkaduthangal were being diverted to the sewage network for treatment and disposal, according to Chennai Metrowater. Responding to a news item published on January 12 in these columns, Metrowater said the sewer mains of residential areas were being diverted to the sewage network for disposal under the Chennai City River Conservation Project. The encroachments on the Adyar River bank, one of the major complaints of the residents, have to be removed by the Public Works Department to facilitate desilting. On residents' complaints about inadequate water supply, Metrowater said that water realisation in Srinagar Colony, Subramanya Mudali Street and Venkatapuram was between 40 and 50 litres per capita a day. Parts of Rangarajapuram First and Second Street, which were not getting piped water supply, were being supplied water through tankers. The water quality in Srinagar Colony was also found to be fine as residual chlorine was within permissible limits, Metrowater added. Residents had complained of poor quality of water supplied in Srinagar colony and inadequate water supply in many parts of Saidapet.
