Mega concert for tsunami victims

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, JAN. 21. Celebrities, musicians and playback singers popped in and out of Narada Gana Sabha all through Friday, where a daylong concert was organised to raise funds for the tsunami.

Some 120 musicians chipped in to contribute their mite to the victims.

The organisers — Carnatica, Laxman Sruthi, Lions Club International, Abbas, Varshaa, Nesam, G.A. Fine Arts and Win TV — hoped that the concert would raise at least Rs. 20 lakhs.According to K.N. Shashikiran of Carnatica, playback singers, Carnatic artistes and folk musicians, often worked separately and rarely got together.

"But this is one occasion when the musical fraternity got together unmindful of the different styles, seniority and egos," said Shashikiran. The morning began with a `Vedagosham' by Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan. Some instrumental music followed with Dr. N. Ramani on the flute and Rajesh Vaidya on the veena.

Playback singer Bhavadarini Ilayaraaja struck a chord with the audience accompanied by the Laxman Sruthi orchestra.

Film stars kept popping in and out with messages of support to the tsunami victims — Srikanth and Pandiarajan were there. S.P. Balasubramaniam was expected, said an organiser in expectant tones.

Around noon, Maharajapuram Srinivasan brought back memories of his father's incomparable rendering of "Bho Shambo", S. Sowmya sang "Karunai Deivamey Karpagame" and the Mambalam Sisters caught the music wafting in the air with "Katriniley Varun Geetham".
