RTC bears the brunt of naxals' ire
By Our Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD,
JAN. 21.
They are in flames, yet again! Left wing extremists have set ablaze five buses of the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) in the last five days, resulting in a loss of nearly Rs. 25 lakhs to the corporation.
The anger expressed by naxalites in the form of torching buses in protest against what they called fake encounters has become a cause for concern for authorities and people as well. It entails financial loss to the corporation and inconvenience to people for whom buses are the main mode of transportation.
Accusing the police of resorting to fake encounters, the Maoists torched a bus on January 16 in Kurnool district.
In the next four days, four more buses were set afire. "Whatever be the prospects of peace talks one thing is clear, we'll bear the brunt of even the slightest deviation from the peace process," an officer observed. Another loss suffered by the corporation is due to cancellation of bus services in the backdrop of bandh call by naxalites.
In view of the bandh on Thursday, the RTC was forced to cancel more than 3,000 services all over the State.
