BANGALORE, JAN. 21. If the number of students from a city like Bangalore with some great schools, getting into the IITs is going down, the reason is because many students have not been encouraged to be strong in fundamentals of mathematics and science. This is the considered opinion of K. Swaminathan of Aspire Learning Company which, he claims, is "not another coaching centre." The Chennai-based company is setting up shop here and plans to have 20 centres by mid-year, reaching out to even smaller towns. "There is also a reason for this situation, when we try to make learning mathematics and science more enjoyable so that a student grasps the fundamentals better, the reaction of most parents is will it help my son or daughter get higher marks. Good grades rather than knowledge is emphasised in many schools," he explains. The method he suggests is to teach fundamentals of mathematics and sciences in Class VIII and Class IX and take students to a more examination preparatory mode in Class X and Class XI. At that stage there should be extensive use of worksheets which a student should complete after class hours and they ought to reflect the student's power of recall.
