KOLKATA, JAN. 22. With a plant load factor of 95.04 per cent, the Mejia Thermal Power Station (MTPS) of the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) has bucked the trend of not only most eastern region power stations but has emerged as the best performing plant in the DVC stable. For the multi-utility DVC, which has a motley of old thermal and hydel power stations to serve an area spanning West Bengal and Jharkhand, MTPS is the lowest cost power producer and one which rakes in a handsome double-digit profit. MTPS' generation of 445.5 million units in December 2004 was higher than the target set by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA). Cumulative performance up to December 2004 indicated a PLF of 77 .1 per cent with a generation cost of Rs. 1.52 paise a kilowatthour. Now, a proposal for rewarding the employees with a month's salary as cash incentive for putting up this performance is under the consideration of the management of this utility, which is jointly owned by the Union Power Ministry, and the State governments of Jharkhand and West Bengal. MTPS, located in Bankura district in West Bengal, is actually one of the latest additions to DVC's list of five thermal power stations, which together have a capacity of 2,535 MW. The three units with a capacity of 630 MW were commissioned between 1996 and 1999 and DVC is now planning to expand the capacity by two more units each of 250 MW. The first of these units was expected to be commissioned within this fiscal, sources said.
