Six medical colleges to admit 100 students each

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE, JAN. 22. The State Government has decided to start six medical colleges from the next academic year (2005-06) and 100 students will be admitted in each college.

Addressing presspersons after a District Health and Family Welfare Officers and District Surgeons' Conference here today, the Minister for Medical Education, Iqbal Ansari, said the Finance Department has given its consent for granting Rs. 1 crore each to the new medical colleges for setting up the infrastructure. The colleges will be established in Shimoga, Bidar, Belgaum, Hassan, Mandya, and Raichur. A Government notification inviting tenders for construction work will be issued next week.

A sum of Rs. 27.5 crores will be spent on each college — Rs. 20 crores on the building and Rs. 7.5 crores on equipment. Representatives of the Medical Council of India will visit the State in March to inspect the infrastructure in the new colleges. The colleges will require only classrooms, as students will use the facilities in district hospitals for practicals, Mr. Ansari said.

The assistant professors and professors for the colleges will be recruited through "walk-in" interviews. He said that special recruitment rules, if need be, will be drafted and the Cabinet's permission secured to conduct walk-in interviews for specialist doctors.

The department has decided to bypass the Karnataka Public Service Commission as it will take at least eight months to complete the recruitment process.
