Police get clues to gang in Sudharsanam murder

By K.T. Sangameswaran

CHENNAI, JAN. 21 . The police have obtained clues about the gang that shot to death the Gummidipoondi MLA, K. Sudharsanam, at his house at Tanakulam in Tiruvallur district on January 9.

The police have stepped up the hunt for the gang, and are identifying isolated houses on the city outskirts and suburbs to protect families, the police say.

Soon after the killing, the police formed five teams to track down the gang. The number of teams has increased to eight, each headed by an inspector. As clues about the State the gang belongs to have been obtained, the police have stepped up vigil. As the gang targets only isolated houses off highways — going by the latest incidents in Tiruvallur district and Bargur in Krishnagiri district and the dacoities in Salem and Kancheepuram districts a few years ago — the police are identifying houses located away from the thickly populated stretches. Besides intensifying patrol on highways and main roads, families in isolated areas have been advised to install burglar alarms or other security devices in their houses. Pamphlets containing the police station and control room numbers are being distributed.

Since the gang wields weapons, checkpoints have been strengthened with the posting of personnel armed with modern weapons. Besides the regular vigil by "highway patrol," motorcycle-borne personnel have been asked to patrol interior areas. The strikes of the gang, which belongs to the north, have a definite pattern.

The police say the killers escaped with 65 sovereigns of gold jewellery.
