MYSORE, JAN. 22. The Minister of State for Labour, Tanvir Sait, today expressed concern over the future of nursing profession in the wake of mushrooming of nursing schools without proper infrastructure.
Lack of infrastructure
Speaking at the Lamp Lighting and Oath Taking ceremony of the first batch of nursing students at the Kamakshi School of Nursing here, he said permission had been granted to a number of nursing schools without proper infrastructure. There has to be a yardstick for granting permission to such specialised schools, Mr. Sait said.
Overburdened
Stating that ESI hospitals have been overburdened with nursing students, Mr. Sait said these hospitals have been left behind with the emerging private medical hospitals. The guaranteed nature of jobs and general failure to meet the expectations of the people are the causes for the bad performance of ESI hospitals. Urging private hospitals to become partners in growth, he said they should also meet the expectations of the government.
Insurance
Promising to bring some sections of society under health insurance schemes, he requested the hospitals to come out with premium rates and efficiency of treatment. This will ensure medical security to the deprived sections as 92 per cent of the workforce is in the unorganised sector.
Affordable drugs
Mr. Sait stressed the importance of developing lifesaving drugs at an affordable cost. When the country can produce heart valves at 20 per cent of the global price, research and development can make such drugs affordable to the poor, he added. The managing trustee of the BSMS Trust, M. Vinod Rao, and the college principal, B.P. Annu, were present.
