Cable TV operators threaten stir

KOCHI, JAN. 22. The Cable TV Operators Association will launch an agitation against Cable Zone which distributes the Sony package for cable TV operators in Kerala. The agitation is in protest against the company's move to impose charges on its subscribers in violation of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) regulations.

Addressing a press conference here today, the Association State president, E. Jayadevan, said HBO channel was removed from the Sony package and introduced in the Zee package by the providers of bouquet of channels. While only Rs.5.60 was charged for HBO in the Sony package, the rate has been raised to Rs.25 for HBO in the Zee package. Mr. Jayadevan said that TRAI stipulated that whenever a pay channel was removed from a bouquet of channels, the amount should be reduced from the total charges.

Dharna on Monday

Similarly, whenever a pay channel is taken out of a bouquet and added to another, the rate for the particular channel should remain the same. The cable TV operators were ready to remit Rs.55 per month for a Sony package having HBO channel, he said

The cable TV operators will stage a dharna in front of the office of the Cable Zone on January 24. This will be followed by an indefinite strike from January 27, he added.
