MADURAI, JAN. 22. The Pattali Makkal Katchi founder, S. Ramadoss, today exhorted the Government to constitute a disaster management authority to oversee relief and rehabilitation measures and take steps to minimise damages during natural calamities in future. Speaking to reporters here, Dr. Ramadoss said the authority should function as a permanent body similar to the one prevailing in Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat. The need of the hour was to evolve a comprehensive management plan to minimise the vulnerability of communities to natural disasters. The Government should seriously consider the suggestion of the Resident Representative of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Maxine Olson, on developing a master plan for disaster management. A draft plan on rehabilitating the tsunami-affected families should be evolved with the consensus of all political parties to ensure that relief was provided in time. The Government should ensure that relief provided by the Centre was expeditiously utilised.
