The Navy, in coordination with agencies such as the National Institute of Oceanography, is conducting a study on the effect of tsunami on the sea, Vice-Admiral O.P.Bansal, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command, said today. Fishermen could do fishing as usual and need not worry about anything, he said answering a question by mediapersons after talks with the Collector, J. Radhakrishnan, and other officials here. Vice-Admiral Bansal said the civil administration was involved in coordination of relief work from the very beginning. He lauded the efforts of the district administration in cooperation with the Navy in providing relief. He pointed out the enormity of logistics effort involved in the relief operation and said government organisations, NGOs and other private groups extended good support. The Nagapattinam coast was the worst affected area and became the focus for the Navy's relief operations. Vice-Admiral said the Navy was adopting a girl child which a woman gave birth to aboard INS Gharial during relief operation in Port Blair. It named her `Varuni'. Mr. Radhakrishnan said the tsunami claimed 6,063 lives in the district and 1.76 lakh others were affected. The Collector placed on record the wonderful service the Navy rendered in relief work in the district.
