Argentina holds Colombia

MANIZALES, JAN. 22. Venezuela defeated Peru 3-0 to clinch a spot in the final round of the under-20 South American championships, while host Colombia and tournament favourite Argentina tied 1-1.

Friday's loss knocks Peru out of the tournament, while both Colombia and Argentina will advance.

Venezuela opened the scoring on a penalty kick by Nicolas Fedor in the seventh minute. Fedor scored again in the 68th minute, while teammate Engelberth Perez finished the scoring in the 79th minute as Peru failed to mount a serious challenge.

In the late game, Colombia took the lead in the 29th minute on a goal by Radamel Falcao Garcia, who received a pass from teammate Cristian Marrugo in front of the goal, brushed off a defender and drove the ball into the right side of the net.

The 20,000 fans went wild at Palogrande Stadium in the heart of Colombia's coffee-growing region, but Argentina's Hernan Peirone tied the score in the 52nd minute with a shot inside the penalty area.

With the tie, Argentina and Colombia move into the final round with 10 points each, but Argentina has the higher ranking due to goals scored in previous games.

Venezuela ended the round with a respectable four points.

Bolivia and Peru ended with two points and one point, respectively, and were eliminated from the tournament. — AP
