KOCHI, JAN. 22. The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, today said the Government was willing to consider increase in the annual grant for the Kerala Press Academy, Kakkanad. It would also consider releasing a sum of Rs. 1 crore promised to the Academy in the current year's State budget. Mr. Chandy was speaking at the 21st convocation of the Academy here on Saturday. He called upon the Academy authorities to draw up a plan for the future of the institution and send it to the Government for possible action. Mr. Chandy gave away certificates to students who had completed the post-graduate diploma courses in Journalism and Communications and in Public Relations and Advertising.
Appeal to Chandy
N.N. Sathyavrathan, Director of the Institute of Communication, in his welcome speech, appealed to the Chief Minister to take steps to improve the facilities at the institute. The appeal was reiterated by the Chairman of the Academy, Thomas Jacob. Sebastian Paul, MP, said he was happy to have been associated with Academy since its inception. K. Babu, MLA; the district panchayat president, K.B. Mohammedkutty; the Thrikkakara panchayat president, M. E. Hassainar; and the Assistant Director of the Institute of Communications, M. Ramachandran; were among those who spoke at the occasion. Mr. Chandy gave away awards and cash prizes to the best students. Binuprasad S. bagged the gold medal in Journalism and Communication. Preema Mohan won the gold medal in Public Relations and Advertising. Manikandan P.K. and Shiji P.K. won the T.K.G. Nair Memorial Cash Awards for the best students. The M.N. Sivaraman Nair Memorial Cash Awards went to Lallu S. and Joby John A. The C. P. Menon Memorial Cash Awards for Effective Writing went to Sijo Joseph and Sreejith R.
