Oceanic survey to be made in Kanyakumari dt.

By Our Staff Reporter

NAGERCOIL, JAN.23. An oceanic survey will be carried out in Kanyakumari by Indomer Coastal Hydraulic Private Limited on January 31, as requested by the Tamil Nadu Maritime Board, to find out whether any changes such as formation of sand dunes and obstructions in the sea occurred after the tsunami hit the coast on December 26 last.

The move is to clear the sea route from the shore to the Vivekananda Rock Memorial and the Thiruvalluvar Statue and to resume the ferry service, according to V. Ramadoss, Secretary, Department of Information and Tourism.

Speaking to presspersons here after visiting the Thiruvalluvar Statue on Saturday, he said a detailed report would be submitted to the Government after conducting the survey.

However, a trial run would be conducted on February 1 and the ferry service resumed in the first week of next month. Steps had already been to repair the two damaged boats belonging to the Poombuhar Shipping Corporation, he said, adding that the renovation of boat jetty was going on in full swing and it would be completed by the end of this month.

Kanyakumari was one of the worst tsunami-affected tourist spots in the State. However, tourist flow was slowly picking up in all tsunami-hit tourist spots in different parts of the state, thanks to the efforts made by the Government, the secretary said.

Mr. Ramadoss visited the Gandhi and Kamarajar mandapams and directed officials to prepare an estimate to construct the damaged walls and to conduct the stability of backside wall of the Gandhi mandapam.

He also asked the officials to apply non-coercive paint while renovating the two mandapams.
