Indian colts crush England

By Our Sports Reporter

Manoj Tiwari bagged five wickets in the second innings to help India Under-19 take a 1-0 lead over England in the Test series.

BANGALORE, JAN. 23. India Under-19 spinners Manoj Tiwari (five for 33) and Avinash Yadav (three for 16) spelt doom for England Under-19 at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Sunday.

The duo's spells helped India Under-19 defeat the visitor by 293 runs in the first Test that concluded on the third day itself as the England Under-19 batsmen failed to read spin. The Indian colts now lead the three Test series 1-0.

Earlier the host declared the second innings at 200 for four after skipper A.T. Rayudu's 58 and vice-captain Manoj Tiwari's breezy unbeaten 50 kept the scoreboard ticking at a fast pace. Chasing an improbable victory target of 423, the visitor kept losing wickets and was bowled out for 129 in 45.4 overs.

Opener Michael O'Shea swatted left-arm spinner Avinash Yadav straight to Robin Uthappa at short mid-wicket and defeat was looming large at the English side.

Avinash Yadav paused midway in his follow-through and flung himself to his left to bring off a one-handed catch to dismiss William Gifford. At lunch the score was 18 for two.

The post-lunch session witnessed an innings in a shambles as skipper Steven Davies displayed inadequate defence after prodding at Yadav only to find in the ball roll back and hit the stumps.

All-rounder Ben Harmison (33) and opener Joseph Denley (24) then shared a 58-run fourth-wicket partnership that delayed the inevitable.

Harmison fell attempting to cut off-spinner Harvinder to a delivery that had no width.

Harvinder also scalped Denley and then the lower order wilted against Manoj Tiwari's leg-breaks. Mitchell Stokes (33) brought some belated cheer to the visitors' dressing room with some clean strikes against the spinners but with Tiwari getting the odd delivery to fizz, the chase stumbled.

The teams will now clash in the second Test commencing at Kolkata on January 27.
