Ex-serviceman murdered

ERODE JAN. 23. An ex-serviceman was found dead under suspicious state on his land yesterday. According to the police Krishnaswamy (60), had a land dispute with Dharman, Rajendran, Arunachalam and Soundararajan of the same village. A civil suit is pending in court for long.

Yesterday, Krishnaswamy received information that Dharman and others are engaged in collecting soil from his land for chamber work (brick kiln). He informed the local Kongu Vellala Gounder Association about it. After some association members and others noticed Krishnaswamy lying on the land and he was taken to hospital, but the doctors declared that Krishnasway was brought dead.

A complaint has been lodged against Dharman and three others with the Anthiyur police.

Three killed in collision

TIRUCHI JAN. 23. Three motorcycle-borne persons were killed when their vehicle collided head-on with a State transport corporation bus at Vaiyampatti today. Police sources said Manikandan (24), of Vaiyampatti, Gunasekharan (45) of Koodalur and Chinnaraj (15) of Vaiyampatti

were proceeding to Manapparai to attend a wedding when their motorcycle dashed against a Palani-bound government bus from Tiruchi. All the three were killed on the spot. The bus driver Settu (50) has been arrested.

16 injured

Sixteen persons on tranvelling by a van were injured when their vehicle collided with a bus near Samathuvapuram close to Viralimalai in the district in the early hours today.

The occupants of the van were going to Tiruchi after attending a Dalit Panthers of India (DPI) meeting in Madurai. The bus was proceeding to Madurai from Tiruchi.

Police sources here said the injured were admitted to the Government Hospital in Tiruchi.

Last date for M.L. applications

CHENNAI JAN. 23. The last date for issue and submission of application forms for admission to M.L.degree courses for 2005 of the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, Chennai, has been extended to February 11, according to an official press release.

`Revive farm workers' board

CHENNAI JAN. 23. The State unit of the All-India Agricultural Workers' Union has demanded that the Farm Workers Welfare Board set up during the previous Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government be revived for the benefit of one crore farm hands and around 50 lakh poor and marginal farmers.

The State secretary, S.Thirunavukkarasu, in a statement here said a resolution adopted at the meeting of the union functionaries at Tiruverumbur in Tiruchi district on Friday urged the Centre to implement the rural employment gurantee programme in such a way that all the farm workers, the poor and the downtrodden in the country were provided jobs for 100 days in a year.

Issuance of new ration cards for all eligible beneficiaries in the rural areas, distribution of free sarees and dhoties to the poor and supply of 30 kg rice a month to the aged, sick, pregnant women and lactating mothers were the other demands.

Constable commits suicide

SALEM JAN. 23. A constable attached to Salem Armed Reserve committed suicide by setting himself on fire here today.

The police said that the constable, Selvaraj (39), died on the spot. The police said that the constable had reportedly made suicide attempts twice earlier. The reason for his suicide is not known.

Discharge stepped up

NAGAPATTINAM JAN. 23. The discharge of water from the Mettur reservoir was stepped up at 11,015 cusecs this evening for Cauvery delta irrigation. The level in the dam stood at 60.14 feet (full level 120 feet) with a meagre inflow of 171 cusecs. The storage in the dam was 24.79 tmc feet (full capacity 93.4 tmc feet).

From the Grand Anicut, Cauvery, Vennar, Grand Anicut Canal and Coleroon 1,108 cusecs, 2,043 cusecs, 1,011 cusecs and 2,685 cusecs were supplied this evening.

No rainfall was recorded in the Cauvery delta region of Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Thanjavur districts.

Gang mazdoors' plea

CHENNAI JAN. 23. The Tamil Nadu Road Gang Mazdoors Union has urged the State Government to reinstate about 10,000 gang mazdoors, who were removed from service a few years ago.

In a statement, V. Sithaiyan, president of the Union, said the Government should withdraw its petition before the Supreme Court, challenging the judgment of the Madras High Court Bench declaring illegal the dismissal of the mazdoors.

Noting that 46 mazdoors had died after the dismissal, he urged members of the Union not to resort to any desperate steps.

Pilgrims throng church

NAGAPATTINAM JAN. 23. Pilgrims from various parts of the country have started thronging the Basilica of Shrine of Our Lady of Health at Velankanni, about 10 km from here.

For the first time after the tsunami strike on the coast, a special colourful illuminated chariot procession of Shrine Velankanni was taken out through the streets of the Velankanni last night. A large number of pilgrims and local people witnessed the procession.

The Bishop of Thanjavur, Rt.Rev.M.Devadass Ambrose, Rev.P.Xavier, Rector, Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Health, Velankanni, and a number of dignitaries witnessed the procession.

VAO arrested

TUTICORIN JAN.23. Lakshmanan, a Village Administrative Officer in Theni district, and his wife, Balanagammal, were today arrested by the All Women Police Station, Kovilpatti near here on the charges of demanding dowry from their daughter-in-law, the police said.

Woman assaulted

Tuticorin Jan.23. A woman was allegedly assaulted by some unidentified persons at Muthukrishnapuram near here today.

The police said Vasantha was attacked with a sickle and was admitted to a hospital.

The police are investigating.

Chain snatched

Tuticorin Jan.23. The police are on the lookout for two youth, who allegedly snatched a golden chain from a 46-year-old woman here on Saturday night.

According to the police, Meenakshi was walking through the Nalatinpudur area, when the youth came in a motorcycle and snatched the chain from her.

The matter is under investigation.

Gang attacks two men

Tuticorin Jan.23. The police have registered a case against Aravind and seven others, following a complaint that they had assaulted Jayaraj (20) and Pon Singh (23) at Nazareth near here on Friday night.

The police said duo were assaulted after some differences cropped up between them and the accused, while playing a cricket match on January 21.

The Nazareth police are investigating.

Selected for awards

KARUR JAN.23 . Five artistes each from Karur district have been selected to receive Kalai awards for 2003-04 and 2004-05.

The awardees for 2003-04 are Samathmika Balaji (Kalai Ilamani), C. Jayasankar (Kalai Valarmani), S. Shanmugham (Kalai Sudarmani), K. Ramu (Kalai Nanmani), and S.P. Anbumani (Kalai Mudhumani).

Similarly, M. SuganthiPriya (Kalai Ilamani), S. Lakshmi (Kalai Valarmani), N. Kulandaisamy (Kalai Sudarmani), K.P. Chockalingam (Kalai Nanmani) and P. Veeramali (Kalai Mudhumani) have been selected for the 2004-05.

Each awardee will receive Rs.2,000 in cash and a citation, says the Collector, A. Kartik.

Bars to remain closed

KARUR JAN.23 . All Indian Made Foreign Liquor shops and bars in Karur district will remain closed on January 25 in view of Vallalar Day, says a press release issued here by the Collector, A. Kartik.

Severe action will be taken against errant shopkeepers, he has warned.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI JAN. 23. The level at the Mettur reservoir stood at 61.44 feet today. The inflow was 140 cusecs, and the discharge 8,973 cusecs .
