Good schools needed in rural areas, says Governor

By Our Staff Correspondent

PADUBIDRI (UDUPI DISTRICT), JAN. 23. The Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, said on Sunday that well-equipped schools are required in rural areas.

The Governor was inaugurating the new building of the Ganapati High School here.

He said schools, besides imparting knowledge, moulded the character of the students. It was education that inculcated discipline in a person. It broadened one's vision and played a vital role in producing good citizens. Talented students existed in rural and urban areas. If only facilities are provided, these students will make a mark. Swami Vivekananda and other saints said that education helped in developing a person's latent capacity.

Education gave self-confidence to citizens to face the world. It was this self-confidence that made India and China fast developing countries. A school should provide intellectual, emotional and spiritual education for all round development of one's personality. Students should be taught the importance of compassion. It was only then that they will love their fellow beings. A school can become good only when it has dedicated teachers.

The Governor expressed concern over the suicide of farmers in different parts of the State and wondered what the cooperative institutions are doing. If farmers suffer from debt burden, alternative means should be thought of to reduce it. Lack of compassion is responsible for the present situation.

Knowledge of Sanskrit will help in modern and scientific development. More research is required in this area. He had learnt Sanskrit for four years and had the yearning to learn more about the language, Mr. Chaturvedi said.

P. Sadashiva Achar welcomed the gathering. Sri Vibudesha Thirtha Swamiji of Sri Admar Mutt released the souvenir, Amruthavani. K. Anantapattabhi Rao proposed a vote of thanks. Manorama Madhwaraj, MP; Lalaji Mendan, MLA; V.S. Acharya, MLC; and P.J. Bagilthaya, retired DIG of Police, were present.
