No respite from cold yet

NEW DELHI JAN. 23. Delhiites are unlikely to get any respite from the cold wave conditions on Monday. The weatherman today forecast further drop in the minimum temperature, which is expected to be 5 degrees Celsius tomorrow. The city sky will remain partly cloudy with fog in the morning. The maximum and minimum temperatures recorded at Safdarjung on Sunday were 15.3 degrees Celsius and 6.5 degrees Celsius respectively, while Palam recorded a maximum temperature of 14.6 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 7.6 degrees Celsius.

While Safdarjung recorded a maximum and minimum relative humidity of 91 per cent and 58 per cent respectively, Palam recorded a maximum humidity of 97 per cent and a minimum of 67 per cent.

`Criminal' arrested

NEW DELHI JAN. 23. An Uttar Pradesh-based criminal carrying a reward of Rs. 10,000 on his head was arrested by the Special Staff of the South Delhi near Batra Hospital on Saturday. A loaded pistol was recovered from his possession.

The accused, Shakir Ali, was wanted in at least 10 cases of murder, dacoity and other cases reported from Badaun in Uttar Pradesh. During interrogation, he revealed that he was trying to set up his base in the Capital.

Held for auto lifting

NEW DELHI JAN. 23. Four persons, who were allegedly involved in auto-lifting, were arrested from Rajinder Nagar in Central Delhi this past week. Three stolen vehicles were recovered at their instance.

According to the police, the accused -- Kuldeep, Jugal Kishore, Dinesh Rawat and Hemant Rawat -- were going in a stolen Maruti Esteem when they were stopped by a police team at Rajinder Nagar. They were arrested after they confessed to their involvement in auto-lifting. The Esteem was found stolen from Nizamuddin. At their instance, the police recovered a stolen motorcycle and a scooter. Efforts are on to trace other stolen vehicles.

Lawyers plan strike

New Delhi Jan 23. Lawyers in the capital's trial courts will strike work tomorrow to protest the alleged custodial death of a colleague. ``Advocates will not attend courts in Patiala House, Tis Hazari and Karkardooma tomorrow'', Delhi Bar Association (DBA) Secretary Sanjeev Nasiar said.

He said Advocate Sanjay Gupta had been taken into custody by the police in a complaint case on Friday. However, soon after he developed chest pain and was shifted to the AIIMS where he was declared bought dead. The charges against Gupta were not serious and did not warrant his police custody, Nasiar said. He called for a detailed investigation into the circumstances leading to the death of Gupta and action against the guilty personnel.
