dated January 25, 1955: Congress session concludes

An inspiring exhortation by Prime Minister Nehru to the assembled Congressmen to carry out the pledges they had taken, and the impressive singing of the National Anthem in chorus by the thousands of delegates and visitors, brought the Avadi session of the Congress to a close on January 23 night. Mr. Nehru briefly summed up the significance of the session and the responsibility laid on Congressmen to fulfil their pledge to implement the resolutions they had adopted during the last three days. Explaining how Congressmen should equip themselves to face the tasks ahead, he criticised sharply the prevalence of provincial and caste feelings and cautioned against falling into such evil ruts. Paying a special tribute to the Congress President, Mr. U.N. Dhebar, for the ability with which he conducted the proceedings, he said that in Mr. Dhebar's hands the Congress would not only be safe but would be rejuvenated. Mr. Dhebar, winding up the proceedings, said that the resolutions adopted at the session should be viewed as one whole and not in bits.
