BOSTON, JAN. 24. A howling blizzard slammed the American Northeast with more than 0.61 metres of snow and hurricane-strength wind gusts, halting air travel for thousands of people, keeping others off slippery highways and burying parked cars under deep drifts. The Massachusetts Governor, Mitt Romney, and the Rhode Island Governor, Don Carcieri, declared states of emergency. Up to 78.7 centimetres of snow fell north of Boston, parts of New Hampshire got 0.61 metres, New York's Catskills collected at least 50.8 centimetres and 45.7 centimetres fell on parts of Connecticut, New Jersey, Rhode Island and the eastern tip of New York's Long Island. The weather system had earlier piled 0.30 metres of snow across parts of Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana and northern Ohio. In addition to the snow, temperatures were expected to reach minus 18 degree Celsius in some areas, with wind chills dropping as low as minus 26.1 degree Celsius. AP
