Landmark verdict

Sir, — Seventeen years after the incident, the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court delivered last week a landmark judgment sentencing 10 policemen to life imprisonment for custodial death. The police personnel were charged not only with killing the suspect in a dacoity case but also with destroying evidence connected to the death.

Hope the verdict will serve as a warning to those policemen who take the law into their own hands and think nothing of using third-degree torture that may lead to death in custody. It will also deter those who project such deaths as suicide by suppressing facts.

P.V. Suresh Babu,
Chennai
