Bus stand development work begins

By Our Staff Reporter

THANJAVUR, JAN.24 . The second phase of development works for a new bus stand here at an outlay of Rs.60 lakh has begun.

The Collector, M.Veera Shanmugha Moni, laid the foundation today to mark commencement of the work. He told The Hindu that the work would be completed in four months. There were three bus terminus - new bus stand, old bus stand and town bus stand in Thanjavur, a special grade municipality, and added that the new bus stand (`A' grade) was established more than a decade ago at the time of Eighth World Tamil Conference on a sprawling area of 26,000 sq. metres.

In the first phase, Rs.one crore was spent during 2000-2001 for laying concrete flooring for about 8,550 sq. metres as per the recommendation of 11th Finance Commission. The Thanjavur Municipality spent Rs.25 lakhs and the Government provided the remaining Rs.75 lakhs as subsidy.

As the existing tar road inside the new bus stand got damaged in the heavy rain causing hardship to passengers who had to wade through knee-deep slushy water during rainy season, the district administration, in coordination with the Thanjavur Municipality, had sent a Rs.60-lakh proposal.

It got approval from the Directorate of Municipal Administration to lay concrete flooring for 6,200 sq. metres in the bus stand where Nagapattinam, Velankanni, Mannargudi and Tiruthuraipoondi buses were being parked. The work commenced today, he said.

The Collector said that a proposal would be sent to the Government under the `traffic management plan' to carry out development work in the town bus terminus in the new bus stand at a cost of Rs.38 lakhs. He said that Rs.9.40 lakhs would be spent for repairing the road at the entrance of the bus stand and the work would be started soon.

The Thanjavur Municipal Chairman, G.Sultan, the Municipal Commissioner, A.N.Santhanam, officials and municipal councillors attended the function.
