BSNL scheme to monitor meter reading

By Our Staff Reporter

KOLLAM, JAN. 24. D. Varadharajan, general manager of Kollam Telecom, said today that BSNL land phone subscribers had been given the facility to monitor the meter reading of their telephones. At a press conference here, he said subscribers can avail of the facility by dialling 1501. The calls would be charged at the normal pulse rate. Bill details can be had by dialling 1671 or1672.

`On demand exchanges'

Mr. Varadharajan said five exchanges under Kollam Telecom had been declared `on demand' exchanges till January 31. The exchanges are Kollam, Vellayittambalam, Kavanad, Pallimukku and Uliyakovil. Applicants for new telephones in these exchanges will get a free India Telephone Card worth Rs. 500 while registering. Installation charges have also been waived for applications received till January 31.

Land and BSNL mobile phones that have been disconnected owing to non-payment of dues up to September 2004 would be reconnected without levying rent for the disconnected period if the subscribers submitted the required application by January 31. At present, Kollam Telecom has 56 towers for mobile phone coverage. Eighty-two new towers would be added soon. Work on the project has commenced.

Broadband services

Broadband services will be introduced in Kollam Telecom by the end of February. A new customer service centre will be opened in the Chinnakada Exchange complex in the first week of February. Two new exchanges, one at Thudayannur and another at Edapallykotta, will also be opened shortly.

Mr. Varadharajan will take charge as Principal General Manager in Thrissur later this week. The GM designate of Kollam Telecom, Antony Leo, was also present.
