WARANGAL, JAN. 24. TDP workers resorted to large-scale violence on Monday. They burnt an RTC bus and damaged at least a dozen buses, many government and private vehicles and hurled stones at shops and establishments. Some bus passengers were injured in stone-pelting. As the news of the party leader, Paritala Ravindra's killing spread, some 3,000 partymen who had assembled for the district unit's meeting, rushed on to the road damaging whatever was in their sight. They went on destructing property all along the route from Nakkalgutta to the Collectorate. They did not even spare a school where children had assembled for the physical training class. The children ran helter-skelter to escape from raining stones. When they reached the Collector's office, they began hurling stones. The DIG, B L Meena, and the SP, Stephen Ravindra, rushed to the scene in strength. This only enraged TDP workers who threw stones damaging windowpanes of four police vehicles. When the SI, Kiran, tried to control them, the angry mob pounced on him. The police were forced to resort to mild lathicharge to disperse them.
Top leaders held
The DIG clamped Section 144 and asked TDP leaders -- Mr. Dayakar Rao, Nagam Janardhan Reddy, MLA V Narender Reddy and several others -- to alight from their vehicles. When they did not oblige, the police arrested them. Mr. Dayakar Rao was lodged at the Hanamkonda police station while Mr. Nagam Janardhan Reddy was taken to the police headquarters. Party workers in large numbers reached the Hanamkonda police station and staged a dharna.
