Invited to Sri Lanka

COIMBATORE JAN. 25. The Sri Lankan Government has invited Mata Amritanandamayi to the island nation to provide spiritual healing and solace to tsunami victims.

The Sri Lankan Minister for Agricultural Marketing Development, Cooperative Development and Hindu Affairs, K.N. Douglas Devananda, invited her stating that several thousand people died in the tsunami and several thousand others were rendered homeless. He commended the Mutt's contribution of Rs. 100 crores for rehabilitation of the victims and said it would inspire others to provide relief, a release from the Mata Amritanandamayi Mutt said today.

The faculty and staff of the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetam contributed Rs. 6 lakhs towards relief work undertaken by the mutt. The faculty of the Amrita schools of engineering, business and journalism at Ettimadai, near here, contributed one per cent of their annual salary, the release said.

Murder case against teachers

SALEM JAN. 24. The police today registered a case under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code against "unnamed teachers" of the government-aided Higher Secondary School at Sooramangalam here in connection with the death of a standard X student, Praveenkumar, in the classroom two days ago.

The police action followed allegations by the boy's parents and relatives that Praveenkumar died of beating at school.

A team of Police and Education Department officials today went to the school and held an enquiry with a few teachers.

Head constable injured

KRISHNAGIRI JAN. 24. A head constable attached to the Hosur town station was injured in the ankle when the service revolver of a Karnataka excise inspector went off accidentally at Hosur about 50 km from here yesterday.

According to the police, Srinivasan, excise inspector, chasing an illicit liquor gang at Athipalli on the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border, opened fire from his service revolver. But the bullet did not get released and the gang escaped into Hosur.

The inspector preferred a complaint with the Hosur town station. Even as formalities were being completed a bullet accidentally went off from his revolver and head constable Veeramani was injured. He was admitted to the Hosur Government Hospital.

Narrow escape

CHENNAI JAN. 24. The Minister of State for Railways, R. Velu, had a narrow escape on Sunday when his car was hit by a lorry near Ranipet.

According to information reaching here, the incident occurred when the Minister was returning to Ranipet after attending a function at Walajah. The car was hit in the rear by the lorry while it was negotiating a curve. The Minister and other occupants escaped unhurt. Mr. Velu got into another car and reached Ranipet.

Earth-Vision 2020 seminar

UDHAGAMANDALAM JAN. 24. A national seminar on "The Earth-Vision 2020" on water management, rainwater harvesting, solid waste recycling, prevention of soil erosion, afforestation and environment, will be one of the highlights of `Summer of 2005' to be held here on April 16 and 17, P.C. Thomas, adviser, organising committee, said here today.

The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, will inaugurate the seminar. The Atomic Energy Commission Chairman, Anil Kakodkar, will be the keynote speaker, and the former Chief Justice, B.N. Kirpal, the chief guest at the concluding session.

Milk cooperatives seek subsidy

SALEM JAN. 24. The employees and workers of `Aavin' units in various districts have urged the State Government to sanction subsidy to District Milk Producers' Cooperative Societies, which are reeling under mounting arrears and heavy losses.

The workers and employees from the Salem, Erode, Dharmapuri, Coimbatore, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Udhagamandalam, Vellore, Villupuram, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts, who met here recently also floated a new forum, "Tamil Nadu All Districts' Aavin Employees and Workers Sammelan" to safeguard their rights. The members claimed that the Government by citing losses as the reason had been refusing dearness allowance and special pay to the employees of the societies.

They also pointed out that the Government's decision to raise the procurement price by Re. 1 a litre had made the societies suffer losses.

Probe into unclaimed bag

CHENNAI JAN. 24. The railway police in coordination with the State `Q' branch police are investigating the seizure of an unclaimed bag at the Chennai Central railway station on Sunday.

The bag contained two metres of fusewire, four pieces of detonator-connecting wires, some chemicals, a school leaving certificate issued in the name of one Ganesan and a State Bank of India ATM card. The railway police sent the chemicals to the forensic laboratory here for examination. A police team had been sent to the Government High School, Akkarai, Pattukottai, which issued the certificate. They are also in touch with bank officials to find out from which branch the ATM card was issued and details of the cardholder.

Smuggled rice seized

VILLUPURAM JAN. 24. The police today arrested 11 persons and seized 11,500 kg of rice, meant for the food-for-work programme. The rice was being taken out in a truck.

The police said during routine vehicle check at Olakkur near here, the rice bags were found in the truck with Kerala registration. However, the crew did not have any valid supporting documents.

Suicide

ERODE JAN. 24. A nurse working at a private nursing home committed suicide on Sunday night. According to the police, Madalai Rani (23) of Michalpalayam near Anthiyur was upset as her parents were opposed to her love affair. She poured kerosene over her body and set herself afire. The Anthiyur police have registered a case.

`Lift ban'

ERODE JAN. 24. The president of the Lower Bhavani Project Ryots Association, C. Nallasamy, in a memorandum to the Chief Minister today, has sought withdrawal of the ban on transportation of cattle in lorries. Mr. Nallasamy said that at present in Erode district, many farmers brought the cattle in lorries to weekly shandies for sale. They incurred huge expenses as they had to bribe the police and other officials to facilitate easy transportation, he said.

Grievances day

ERODE JAN. 24. The grievances day for the Erode Urban division electricity consumers will be conducted on January 25 at the office of the Executive Engineer, Urban Division, EVN Road at 10.30 a.m.

Arrested

ERODE JAN. 24. Forty persons, including 16 women, were arrested by the Uthukuli police today when they prevented the panchayat officials from evicting the encroachers from a Panchayat school in Uthukuli. According to the police, a few persons had encroached upon an area in the Uthukuli Panchayat Elementary School and were trying to put up huts.

Demonstration

SALEM JAN. 24. BJP cadres, led by the MLA, Lakshmanan, and frontline leaders of the party's Salem district unit, staged a demonstration near the Old Bus stand here today demanding the immediate release of the Kanchi seers, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi and Vijayendra. Senior party leaders including Ramesh, Mathivanan, Balasubramanian and the State secretary, Umaraj, participated in the agitation.

Murder convict dies in hospital

TIRUNELVELI JAN.24. A convict in a murder case died in the hospital today after being admitted for tuberculosis treatment.

The police said Ayyamperumal (44) of Kalakkad in the district was arrested for having murdered his wife last year. Since he was suffering from tuberculosis, he was admitted to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital on January 19. However, he died today.

The Revenue Divisional Officer, Tirunelveli, Karu. Kasinathan, visited the hospital and conducted an enquiry.

Woman dies

Tuticorin Jan.24. A woman, who was allegedly assaulted by some unidentified persons here on Saturday, died at the Tirunelveli Government Hospital on Sunday.

The police said Vasantha was attacked with a sickle at her house at Muthukrishnapuram falling under the Tuticorin north police station limits.

Youth killed

Tuticorin Jan.24. A 26-year-old youth died, after a lorry hit the motorcycle he was riding at Antoniarpuram near here this evening.

The police said the youth died on the spot and Pudukottai police are investigating the matter.

Vehicle missing

Tuticorin Jan.24. The police are on the lookout for vehicle lifters who allegedly stole a vehicle of Sorimuthu at Eral near here on January 8.

According to the police, Sorimuthu parked the vehicle near the Eral temple and attended some personal works. On return, he found his vehicle missing.

Vehicles seized

Ramanathapuram Jan.24. The police seized four vehicles and 33 two-wheelers in the Thondi and Thiruvadanai areas of the district during a surprise raid on Sunday night.

The Superintendent of Police, Ashok Kumar Das, who led a team, said there were no proper documents for the seized vehicles. It was believed that all the vehicles were stolen ones.

Meanwhile, two persons were caught red handed when they were about to take away motors from a well near Thiruvadanai. The police have registered a case.
