Flights diverted as fog descends

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JAN. 24. Six domestic and two international flights were diverted away from Delhi this morning as thick fog enveloped Indira Gandhi International Airport making landing and take-off of aircraft difficult.

The Airports Authority of India said that while the night and early morning flight operations were normal, there was disruption when thick fog engulfed the airport all of a sudden around 8 a.m. when the runway visual range went down to 175 metres. With the visibility being 125 metres to 175 metres between 8-15 a.m. and 9-48 a.m., six incoming domestic flights were diverted.

These included Jet Airways 9W-702 which was coming in from Ahmedabad and was diverted to Jaipur; 9W 301 of Jet Airways which was coming from Mumbai and was also diverted to Jaipur; IC 263 of Indian Airlines which was coming from Kolkata and was diverted to Lucknow; and DN 607 of Air Deccan which was coming from Hyderabad and was diverted to Jaipur. Two non-scheduled flights coming from Kolkata were also diverted to Agra and Jaipur.

The period also saw an Air India AI 310 flight from Mumbai being sent back and a non-schedule flight being diverted to Lahore. It was only at 10 a.m. that the flight operations resumed when a domestic flight of Jet Airways 9W 336 took off for Mumbai as the visibility improved to 350 metres.
