Compensation: court order to attach govt. property

By Our Staff Correspondent

DAVANGERE, JAN. 24. Staff of the local court and an advocate went to the Assistant Commissioner's office here today to attach the movable articles, including a car, according to a direction by the judge of the Civil Court, Senior Division.

The Deputy Commissioner, M.S. Ravishankar, rushed to the Assistant Commissioner's office and urged the court officials not to execute the order.

Time sought

He sought three months to pay compensation to farmers whose land had been acquired.

The Assistant Commissioner, who is also the competent authority for acquiring land, had acquired 800 acres from 1,400 farmers of Davangere and Harihar taluks for the Bhadra Channel project 20 years ago. A sum of Rs. 5 crores is yet to be paid to the farmers. The court issued an order nine years ago to settle the compensation due to the farmers.

The Deputy Commissioner told the advocate A.G. Prasanna Kumar that he had written to the Government seeking funds to pay compensation to the farmers.

He said that he will bring the matter to the notice of the secretaries of the Irrigation and Finance departments and urge them to release the money at the earliest.

Loans

Mr. Prasanna Kumar said the farmers had availed themselves of loans from banks and the court had ordered to attach their property for non-payment. Many banks had seized tractors and other farm equipment of such farmers.

The farmers had moved the court, which issued the direction to attach the property at the Assistant commissioner's office, he added.

Tension

Tension prevailed in front of the Assistant Commissioner's office for some time when a large number of farmers gathered there.
