By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI, JAN. 24 . As part of its ongoing modernisation programme, Postal Department authorities have installed a `touch screen' inside the Head Post Office (HPO) here to the enable people to obtain all postal - related information by just touching the screen.

The new facility gives a wide variety of information including the existing postage rates, various savings scheme of the department, Postal Life Insurance, Postal Index Number of cities concerned, telephone numbers of the Post Master General and Philately.

Besides Tiruchi, the `touch screen' facility has already been introduced in the HPOs located at Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore. With the introduction of this user-friendly facility, the earlier practice of providing all postal related information on boards installed inside and outside the HPOs has now been done away with, the authorities here told The Hindu .

The facility also enables the department to add more information as and when required and whenever there was a change in the rates or introduction of a new scheme etc. in future. The touch screen has eight categories on the right side including postage, savings, PLI, Pin Code, Philately. Information about a particular category could be obtained by just pressing the button concerned, which would enable the customer to get information.

The new facility gives information about 10 savings schemes along with the interest rates besides providing details about the PLI and categorisation of policies. The latest stamps that were issued could also be known by pressing the `philately' button. The touch screen also has a `general' category, which would give vital information such as the telephone numbers of blood bank, hospitals, sight seeing spots etc. This has been included in the facility basically to help the public, says a senior official of the Department.

Earlier, the authorities used to display postal related information in boards and exhibited either inside or outside the Head Post Office. Moreover, it would be difficult to provide all information in the boards and repair them. Now, with the introduction of this facility, the Department is now in a position to provide more information and modify as and when required to the public who will get a chance to browse through the information by touching the screen, the official pointed out. There is also a `quiz' category in the screen, which features questions related to philately giving a choice of answers along with each question. This is basically to create interest among the public about philately, the official said. The software for the new facility has been developed by the Postal Training Centre at Mysore.
