Temperature

TIRUCHI, JAN. 24. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 32 degree Celsius and a minimum temperature of 23.1 degree Celsius.

17 commuters injured

As many as 17 passengers were injured when the mini-auto in which they were commuting overturned on Vazhavanthi bridge in the district on Sunday. The passengers were proceeding from Krishnapuram to Kokkuvettiyan Koil.

Some of the injured were admitted to the Government Hospital, Musiri, while a few were admitted to Government Hospital, Tiruchi. The Musiri police have registered a case.

Body found

The body of a man was found near drainage at Haribaskar Colony near Ramji Nagar on Sunday. The identity of the deceased and the cause of the death were not known. The police are investigating.

`Thaither' festival

Hundreds of devotees pulled the temple car of Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple on the occasion of "Thaither" festival held at Srirangam today. The temple car was pulled around the car streets of the temple. The pulling of the temple car is the highlight of the 10-day `Thaither' festival, which began on January 16.

Protest against service tax

Traders owing allegiance to the Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangankalin Peravai in Tiruchi have decided to wear black badges and hoist black flags atop their shops from January 29 to 31 in protest against the service tax and the Centre's move to introduce the value added tax. The decision was taken at a district-level meeting of the Peravai members, a release by the district secretary, V. Govindarajulu, said.

The Peravai condemned the move to levy the VAT and termed it "anti-people." The meeting decided to launch a public campaign on the adverse impact of the service tax and the proposed VAT, the release said.

Mobile phone bills payment

The Department of Posts made arrangements for the payment of bills for postpaid BSNL mobile connections according to an official release. Subscribers could pay monthly bills at the nearest post offices, the release said, and appealed to BSNL subscribers to make use of the facility.

Mettur level

The level in the Mettur dam stood at 58.98 feet today. The inflow was 153 cusecs and the discharge 10,000 cusecs.
