COIMBATORE, JAN. 24. In the wake of intelligence reports about the possibility of extremists attack in the neighbouring State of Kerala, the Coimbatore City and Rural District Police have stepped up vigil in and around Coimbatore. The policemen equipped with automatic weapons are on high alert on the arterial and feeder roads that connect Coimbatore with the neighbouring State of Kerala, police sources pointed out. Check-posts have been revived on the Coimbatore - Palakkad and Pollachi - Palakkad roads for conducting an intense vehicle check of the inter-state vehicular traffic. Vehicle checks and lodge checks have been stepped up round-the-clock in the city. More number of mobile patrols has been pressed into service besides frisking passengers at the railway stations and bus stands. Door Frame Metal Detectors have been installed at vital installations and Hand Held Metal Detectors of the Anti-Sabotage Teams attached to the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squads have been pressed into service. The communally sensitive pockets in Coimbatore West have been brought under tight surveillance.
Special bandobust
A special bandobust scheme has been put in place in the city under the supervision of the DIG of Police, Coimbatore Range holding additional charge Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore City, Ashutosh Shukla, and the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Law and Order, P. Nagarajan. In Coimbatore Rural District, the sensitive pockets such as Tirupur, Podanur and Mettuppalayam have been brought under a tight security cordon under the supervision of the Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore District, R. Dhinakaran. The venue of the Republic Day parade in the city at VOC Park has already been brought under a tight security dragnet. There was no pointed intelligence on the possibility of sabotage attempts and the stepped up security was only a preventive measure, police officials said.
