Kerala women upset Bengal

PANVEL, JAN. 25. Kerala women staged the first major upset in the team event beating the more fancied Bengal to enter the quarterfinals of the senior National and inter-State table tennis tournament near here on Tuesday.

In a fixture that lasted two hours, Kerala's trio of Anju Thomas, M.R. Ranjana and Aparna Nair scored victories while Bengal's Syantika Kundu won both her matches for Bengal.

In a gruelling 2-1/2-hour fixture, Assam beat Madhya Pradesh 3-2.

In the men's pre-quarterfinal matches, Petroleum Sports Promotion Board blanked Mizoram 3-0 to make the last eight.
