dated January 26, 1955: Civic reception to Dhebar

Mr. U.N. Dhebar, Congress President, replying to a welcome address presented to him by the Corporation of Madras on January 24 afternoon, paid a tribute to the administration of the Corporation and said Madras was among the cleanest cities in India. He expressed the hope that the Corporation would play its role in establishing democracy on a firm ground in India and shaping the destiny of the country. The function was held at the Council Hall in the Ripon Buildings. A large and distinguished gathering, including Mr. K. Kamaraj Nadar, Chief Minister, Mr. M. Bhaktavatsalam, Minister for Agriculture, and Mr. M.A. Manickavelu Naicker, Revenue Minister, was present. Mr. Dhebar was received, on arrival, by Mr. M.A. Chidambaram, Mayor, Mr. T.S. Govindaswami, Deputy Mayor, and Mr. V.N. Subbaroyan, Commissioner, and conducted to the hall. The address of welcome, enclosed in a beautiful silver casket modelled on the famous Asoka Stupa, was presented to the Congress President by the Mayor. The lions at the top of the Asoka Stupa were gold plated.
